Here is more information on the seminar topics:
MARCH 20, 2010
Clever Dogs, Clueless People – half day
This half-day presentation will address the many pitfalls dog owners and professionals can stumble into when living and working with dogs. Sarah will touch upon the fallout of flooding techniques, the outdated dominance theory, barrier frustration, resource guarding and how to prevent it, why dogs need mental stimulation and how to provide it, and more! So many behavior issues that develop can be prevented and Sarah will point out the warning signs as well as what to do if you are already there. This presentation will include video footage.
Behavior Building Blocks – half day
A strong house starts with a solid foundation – Sarah believes there are five behaviors that must be taught to every dog for this foundation. This half-day presentation will include video footage. These behaviors are not only helpful in creating a well-mannered family companion, but also a necessity when dealing with behavioral issues, including aggression.
MARCH 21, 2010
Puppies, Puppies, Puppies:
Discussing Development, Selection, & Aggression – full day
What we know about social development in puppies: sensitive periods; when to introduce to people, children, novel, other dogs; Carmen Battaglia work with puppies; how trainers should interview breeders (choosing a puppy workshop).
What I wish I learned in puppy kindergarten: Proper socialization & more.
Serious Aggression in Puppies: Puppies under 16 weeks of age have the capacity to exhibit worrisome issues including severe fear, resource guarding, offensive aggression and overconfidence. It is critical for trainers that offer puppy classes or in-home services to learn how to recognize early signs of aggression seen at this age and the importance of early behavioral intervention, before the behavior was worsened through rehearsal and practice. All too often aggression in puppies is perceived as harmless and dismissed with the belief that they'll "grow out of it." This seminar is a must for dog professionals. Dog enthusiasts are also welcome.
